Background: Thousand and one amino acid (TAO) kinases are Ste20p-related MAP kinase kinase kinases (MAP3Ks). The Tao kinase subfamily has three members in mammals: TAOK1 (also known as MAP3K16, PSK2 or MARKK); TAOK2 (MAP3K17 or PSK1) and TAOK3 (MAP3K18, JIK or DPK)). TAOs are important regulators of genotoxic stress response and regulate e.g. p38 via their ability to phosphorylate and activate the MAPK kinases MEK3 and 6. Furthermore, TAOs have been implicated in regulation of cytoskeleton stability, G protein-coupled receptor signaling to p38, and cell survival.
