NSC 87877 is a potent protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) inhibitor with selectivity for SHP-2 and SHP-1 (IC50 values are 0.32 and 0.36 µM). The inhibitor probably interacts with the catalytic cleft of the PTP domain. NSC 87877 displays lower activity for other PTPs (IC50 values are 1.7, 7.7, 65.6, 84.5 and 150.9 μM for PTP1B, HePTP, DEP1, CD45 and LAR).  In cell based assays NSC 87877 inhibits EGF-induced SHP-2 dependent Erk1/2 activation.
